History of McClements
John and his wife Sonia open McClements Restaurant in 1987. The restaurant was a tiny two up and two down cottage which had only seven tables.
In 1987 there were only ten restaurants in Twickenham and at present there are now sixty-seven restaurants in the area.
The restaurant gained a fine reputation for excellent food and many national reviews.
The restaurant was regularly visited by famous people, including Michael Caine, Michael Winner, Roger Moore and Jenny Seagrove.
John became great friends of the duo Ray Galton and Alan Simpson famed for writing the TV show Steptoe & Son.
The restaurant was forced to close due to a fire, which had started in the premises next door in 1995. The restaurant reopened, but due to popular demand the restaurant was too small and a larger restaurant was acquired.
McClements, after years of hard work gained a Michelin star in 2004. McClements then bought the next door of the restaurant in Whitton Road and opened Ma Cuisine.
Ma Cuisine went on to win the Evening Standard / London Tonight Restaurant of the Year. Due to changes, McClements closed it’s doors in 2005 and has now reopened as A Taste of McClements in Kew.
